Launching "Blue for Black"

We are thrilled to announce the official commencement of Blue for Black, a flagship initiative dedicated to advancing sustainable development across the Black Sea region.

The project was recently inaugurated with a high-level conference in Bursa, Turkey, bringing together regional partners, industry experts, and key stakeholders to set the stage for a greener maritime future.

A Strategic Partnership:

Supported by the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC), this project is a collaborative effort driven by a commitment to regional excellence. We are proud to work alongside our esteemed partners:

  • Bursa Teknik Üniversitesi (Turkey)
  • Burgas Free University (Bulgaria)
The Mission: Defining the Blue Port Index (BPI)

The core objective of Blue for Black is the development of the Blue Port Index (BPI). This scientific, data-driven framework is designed to evaluate and benchmark Black Sea ports based on four critical pillars:

  • Environmental Sustainability: Measuring carbon footprints and ecological impact.
  • Digitalisation: Integrating smart technologies into port operations.
  • Infrastructure: Assessing the capacity for modern, high-efficiency logistics.
  • Green Transformation: Evaluating the transition toward renewable energy and circular economy practices.
  • By providing a standardized metric, the BPI will empower policymakers and maritime leaders to enhance port performance and increase their contribution to the Blue Economy across all BSEC member states.

    Why It Matters:

The Blue for Black project addresses the most pressing challenges and opportunities in the region:

    • Optimizing Trade: With over 80% of global merchandise moving by sea, improving port efficiency directly boosts regional connectivity and competitiveness.
    • Promoting Marine Tourism: Sustainable port management ensures cleaner coastal environments, which are vital for thriving tourism and local economic growth.
    • Environmental Resilience: By focusing on green transformation, we are actively protecting marine ecosystems and ensuring the long-term health of the Black Sea.
    Alignment with Global Standards

Our objectives are strictly aligned with the Common Maritime Agenda for the Black Sea. We are dedicated to building a resilient, sustainable maritime corridor that serves as a model for regional cooperation and environmental stewardship.
